Join the Australian String Quartet and award-winning Australian soprano, Tiffany Speight, for a brave and evocative program of music by Andriessen, Respighi, Golijov and Brahms.

The concert will open with Louis Andriessen’s Facing Death (1990), in which the composer dares four string instruments to imitate Charlie Parker’s alto saxophone. The result is bebop for strings; astringent, exhilarating and very fast

Tiffany Speight will join the Quartet for Respighi’s dramatic and declamatory setting of Percy Bysshe Shelley’s poem Il tramonto — The Sunset and two stunning works by Osvaldo Golijov, Colourless Moon and How Slow the Wind. The program will conclude with Brahms’ String Quartet No. 2 Op. 51, in which Brahms takes liberties with form and tempo, contrasting lyrical calm with dramatic twists and moments of turbulence — beauty emerging from struggle.

One of Australia’s pre-eminent chamber ensembles, the Australian String Quartet features a stellar line-up, comprising Kristian Winther and Anne Horton on violin, Stephen King, viola, and Rachel Johnston, cello. The members of the Australian String Quartet are privileged to perform on a matched set of instruments hand-crafted by Giovanni Battista Guadagnini between c.1743–1784 in Italy.

Among the Quartet’s 2012 performance highlights were its festival appearances at the Trasimeno Music Festival in Italy, Canterbury Festival in the UK and the Automne Musical d’Ollon in Switzerland.

The Festival is thrilled to have Tiffany Speight as part of this performance collaboration with the Australian String Quartet. Tiffany is a Helpmann and Green Room Awardee, a recipient of the Vienna State Opera Award and is heavily in demand on the Australian and international opera circuit.

Two of Melbourne’s most admired musicians unite to perform a recital full of contrasts, which promises a colourful and engaging afternoon of fine music.

This recital will have something for everyone. It is a journey amongst some of Tiffany’s favourite pieces and roles, including Mozart’s Dove sono from The Marriage of Figaro, Dvorak’s Song to the Moon from Rusalka, works by Grieg and Ivor Novello.

Tiffany’s sparkling soprano voice, matched by her famously warm and engaging stage presence, will be perfectly counter-balanced by accompanist David McNicol, whose sensitive and insightful piano work sets him apart in his profession. They will perform in the home of Harvey Mitchell with David playing the famous Bosendorfer Imperial, that was made, it is believed, in Vienna in 1899. Its special sonority is due to the built quality, and the effect of the unique half-octave on the bottom end of the scale.

David McNicol is one of the most highly regarded piano accompanists in Australia, having studied the art with the late Margaret Schofield in Melbourne and Geoffrey Parsons in London.

2013 brings with it the 50th anniversary of the death of ‘the little sparrow’, so it is apt that French-born cabaret star Caroline Nin has created a performance in honour of Piaf’s music and tragic but extraordinary life.

Caroline Nin made her debut in the late 80s at the Hollywood Savoy in Paris, a swing and jazz venue. A classic femme fatale with charm and intrigue, Caroline Nin has a captivatingly rich voice and a large musical repertoire from Piaf to Minnelli, Bassey to Brel to her own compositions.

Caroline is currently the lead singer of the famous nightclub on the Champs Elysees, the Paris Lido where her predecessors included the likes of Piaf herself, Judy Garland, Bette Midler, Shirley Maclaine, Josephine Baker and Noel Coward.

A finalist in the 2011 Helpmann Awards for Best Cabaret Performer, Nin’s frank and tender bi-lingual tribute to France’s most famous chanteuse is spine-tingling as she breathes new life into familiar anthems. This Piaf tribute is not an impersonation, but an empathetic homage by a fellow Parisian chanteuse.

‘When Nin sings in her soulful, just husky-enough voice, the room strains to listen and hairs on the backs of necks stand up. An evening rich in poignant poetry.’
Simon Ferguson, Daily Telegraph

This premiere Australian performance by world-renowned Corsican a capella choir A Filetta, is guaranteed to be a 2013 Castlemaine State Festival highlight. A Filetta’s glorious, divinely pure, polyphonic harmonies mirror the magnificent and rugged beauty of the group’s native Corsica, an island still deeply and proudly immersed in ancient tradition. With a sound that is stirringly sublime, these male choralists sensitively detect the movement and vibration in each other’s bodies to blend harmoniously into a single instrument.

Led by founder Jean-Claude Acquaviva, A Filetta’s music encompasses traditional compositions as well as its own interpretation of the island’s contemporary culture, without straying from its roots. To assert its Corsican identity, the group’s name refers to a type of fern that grows on the island of Corsica.

A Filetta will be performing works from the very traditional Corsican chant paghjella (sacred hymns), to contemporary works by Jean-Claude Acquaviva for Medea, Requiem, Pessoassion, theatre and film music.

The Sun Songbook led by Australian jazz trumpeter Phil Slater, is a modern jazz ensemble performing adaptations and interpretations of the music of Peter Sculthorpe, one of Australiaʼs pre-eminent composers. Sculthorpe was declared an Australian National Living Treasure in 1998, and for his work as a composer holds both the Order of Australia and of the British Empire.

Sculthorpe’s music draws upon influences ranging from Australian Aboriginal song, Japanese gagaku, Javanese gamelan and Western liturgical music. His music evokes contemporary Australian life, and both the timeless beauty of the Australian landscape and its destructive power — a kind of Australian gothic. The lasting metaphor for Sculthorpe is the sun, and his Sun Music series draws upon the dual nature of the sun as the giver of life and the bringer of death.

The Sun Songbook is the latest project of multi-award-winning trumpeter and composer Phil Slater. He has performed and recorded with Nigel Kennedy, Lou Reed, Sandy Evans, James Morrison, Mike Nock, Terumasa Hino, DIG, Martha Wainwright, Missy Higgins, Vince Jones, Bernie McGann, Archie Roach, Katie Noonan, Jim Black and the Australian Art Orchestra.

This ensemble performing with Phil Slater features pianist Matt McMahon (both Slater and McMahon are former students of Sculthorpe), guitarist Carl Dewhurst, bassist Brett Hirst, drummer Simon Barker and Erkki Veltheim on viola.

‘Slater’s trumpet playing is clearly out of the Miles Davis school. This is original music of real depth, worth listening to again and again.’

Arrebato Ensemble are outstanding musicians led by acclaimed flamenco guitarist Greg Alfonzetti. Merging original music with contemporary flamenco, they create a passionately moving musical style with an intensely international flavor.

The music of Arrebato Ensemble excites audiences and critics alike with their dynamic presence and joyous sound, appealing to audiences from the flamenco aficionado, to jazz and world music fans, to lovers of fine chamber music. The instrumental line-up includes cello, double bass, oud, saxophone, harmonica and percussion, with a result that is arresting and hauntingly beautiful.

Performances at WOMADelaide, Sydney Festival, Sydney Opera House and at the International Australian Festival of Chamber Music, have established Arrebato Ensemble as an important arrival on the Australian music scene.

The Necks are a trio from Sydney comprising Chris Abrahams on piano, Tony Buck on drums and Lloyd Swanton on bass guitar and double bass. As The Necks, they conjure a chemistry together that defies description in orthodox terms.

Typically a live performance will begin very quietly with one of the musicians playing a simple figure. One at a time, the other two will join with their own contributions, all three players independent yet intertwined. As the ‘piece’ builds through subtle micro-changes, the interaction of the instruments creates layers of harmonics and prismatic washes of sound that lead some to the appellation ‘trance jazz’. Instant by instant, their music seems driven not so much by the convention of cause and effect, but by the ‘insistent demand of the moment’.

Featuring lengthy pieces that slowly unravel in the most mesmerising fashion, frequently underpinned by an insistent deep groove, the 16 albums by The Necks stand up to re-listening time and time again. The deceptive simplicity of their music throws forth new charms on each hearing. Not entirely avant-garde, nor minimalist, nor ambient, nor jazz, the music of The Necks is unique in the world today.

‘Absolutely riveting … how three musicians can sound like eighteen is a mystery … extraordinary magical sounds emerged from the ensemble … the way The Necks do this with acoustic instruments is nothing short of miraculous’

Bringing together the crème of Melbourne’s emerging innovators and musical agitators, The Raah Project reimagines the established concepts of jazz, electronica, hip hop, dance and soul music.

The Raah Project embraces both traditional and new principles of jazz improvisation and arrangement, 20th century composition, song, verse and flow.

With musical influences as diverse as Kanye West, Charlie Parker, Igor Stravinsky and King Tubby, musical directors Ryan Ritchie and Tamil Rogeon’s compelling new vision will be delivered by a 26-piece ensemble comprising a horn section, jazz rhythm section and string section including players from the Australian National Academy of Music.

Following the release of their debut album Score (2010), The Raah Project sold out a national tour and received sparkling reviews across Europe and the UK (Rolling Stone; #6 Jazz Album of the Year on iTunes). The Raah Project are thrilled to be featuring new musical works for their performance at the 2013 Castlemaine State Festival.

‘I couldn’t believe how good it was — it was definitely up there and beyond. It was a bit of Matthew Herbert, a little bit of Sa-Ra Creative Partners, but with its own melodic Australian vibe going on.’
GILLES PETERSON, THE INDEPENDENT (UK)

‘Ritchie is as persuasive a rapper as he is a singer, equipped with the rhythmic instincts of a jazz vocalist or beat poet. And Rogeon’s solo violin fuels the ensemble’s dynamic fire.’

The music of John Dowland (1563–1626) and Henry Purcell (1659–1695), two of the greatest English musicians of all time, will form part of the program for this unmissable concert.

‘FLAP!’ yelled Jess Guille to a bird battling headwinds in the stratosphere … and so, as legend has it, the name of this fiery Melbourne band was born.

Flap! is a blistering yet charming five-piece band of brass, guts, words and skins who crank out up-tempo songs, turning street shoes into dancing shoes. They play original music that is both old and new, inspired by the entire human diaspora. Influences from 1920s jazz, Gypsy Brass, English Folk and Trinidadian Calypso can be heard peeping through their antipodean veneer.

Formed during an informal jam at the 2007 Port Fairy Folk Festival and playing their first gig at the Woodstock Cafe at Christiania, Copenhagen, that same year, Flap! have since become Festival favourites across Australia. Flap! are definitely an ‘up’ band, now veterans of the best of Australia’s music Festival circuit.

Fresh from their A Great Day For The Race two-month European tour in late 2012, Flap! are in Castlemaine pumped and hot-to-trot.

The Mae Trio is the delightful result of the combined talents of three young award-winning musicians fast making a name for themselves in the world of contemporary folk — local sisters Maggie and Elsie Rigby, with Anita Hillman. They possess a grace beyond their years, and write strikingly insightful original songs which they sing in exquisite harmony.

The Mae Trio create driving rhythms on banjo, ukulele, cello and bass, interspersed with evocative violin/cello duet arrangements and the haunting sound of concert marimba. Their songs are poetic and melodic, from the lament for a lost banjo to a lyrical tribute to William Morris, and much in between.

Maggie and Elsie won the prestigious Lis Johnston Memorial Award for Vocal Excellence at the National Folk Festival 2011. Anita has performed with the successful folk band Evelyn’s Secret, and with the Melbourne Scottish Fiddle Club.

With disarming charm in their song delivery, and the spoken introductions in between, this trio is fresh off the blocks and utterly lovely.

Fast and furious one moment, soulful and reflective the next, London Klezmer Quartet’s traditional and self-penned melodies will stir your emotions and feed your soul with authentic ‘sounds of the shtetl’.
Individual band members are in demand across the musical spectrum, having recorded and toured with the likes of Jackson Brown, Bonnie Raitt, the Indigo Girls, Sinead O’Connor, Natacha Atlas, She’Koyokh and Vardos.

A postmodern bush band, Jenny M. Thomas and the System have been busy reclaiming lost Australian cultural territory. Songs of criminal women and convict men, treachery and transportation, have been dragged out of the songbooks, ripped apart, then lovingly put back together as a reminder that our history never leaves us.

Following a brief residency at the Old Fryerstown School, these artists have prepared a special performance responding to the distinctive characteristics of this historic gold rush town and its recently restored School.

Joined by her two-man band The System (named after the system which transported convicts to Australian penal colonies), exemplary musicians Dan Witton (double bass and vocals) and Chris Lewis (drums and vocals), Jenny M. will change everything you thought you knew about Australian bush music.

‘Bold, inspired and beautiful in its intensity, Bush Gothic takes your breath away’
In this region hundreds of people regularly express themselves through singing and music. VOICE & CO. is a series of workshops that will bring together local and visiting singers and choir directors with our community in the spirit of song. The collective inspiration and works from the workshops will gain flight on the last day of the festival.

BANDMOUTH: A lip-to-lung global vocal adventure with Mal Webb
Around the world and into your gob, vocal explorer and songwriter Mal Webb takes you on a lip-to-lung journey through the physics, physiology and phrivolity of all the sounds a face can make. Sideways yodeling, beat box/mouth drums/vocal percussion, harmonics/throat singing, mic technique, uvular fluttering, advanced clapping, vocal distortion (without hurting) and Inuit panting (way beyond Rolf Harris) are all explored on the way to being a band with your voice and the lead singer too.
Saturday 16 March, 11am

THE WRITE STUFF with Casey Bennetto
In this workshop, Casey Bennetto leads participants through the funhouse that is modern songwriting in action. Where do we begin? How do we proceed? What lies at the heart of every great song? The group will attempt to fashion a new song collaboratively during the session, disturbed at random (and hopefully brief) intervals by the host spouting off about technique and intent and the impossibility of collaboration in songwriting.
Saturday 16 March, 2pm
Castlemaine Primary School

ALL OF WHAT WE ARE with Penny Larkins and Carl Pannuzzo
Working with our voices with respect to the physical space in which we sing and how we are feeling in a particular moment, participants will create a ‘Song of Now’. Three different sonic spaces will be our inspiration and all the sounds we can make will be our palette. All experience levels are necessary so that we can showcase a vibrant tapestry of sound representative of a slice of festival going public.
Sunday 17 March, 11am
Phee Broadway Theatre Foyer

SONGS OF SUDAN with Ajak Kwai
Ajak Kwai is the rare voice of a Sudanese woman in Australia. She has a haunting melodic voice that is distinctly African and to listen to her is to experience the continent in all its colors, rhythms and mystery. In her workshop, Ajak will take participants on a journey of beautiful traditional Sudanese women’s songs that can be sung by everyone. She will also share some of her own songs that fuse her African roots with grassroots Australian music.
Sunday 17 March, 2pm

STORY AND SONG with Anne Conway
Bendigo-based Indigenous vocalist and guitarist Anne Conway was inducted into the Tamworth Hall of Fame in 1997. Her music has a strong Aboriginal heritage component and encompasses many genres. She is particularly adept at storytelling through her music and she loves singing about Australia and its people. In this intimate workshop, Anne will share stories and songs including those from her work with Aboriginal elders.
Monday 18 March, 7pm

FOUNDATIONS with Scott Sanders
Local musician, choir director and composer, Scott Sanders will lead participants through a workshop introducing, and developing vocal techniques, abilities and sounds that form the foundation of speech and singing. By focusing on the fundamental elements of phonetics and exploring specific regions of the voice system, new meaning and music is created by the group by identifying, isolating and redefining the basic palette of human vocal communication.
No music reading or previous vocal experience required.
Tuesday 19 March, 7pm
Castlemaine Primary School

ONE VOICE with Stephen Taberner
Melbourne-based choir-leading guru and spookmeister Stephen Taberner comes to Castlemaine for a one-off journey into the latest things that are turning him on… body and vocal percussion tidbits, secret ditties from the Spooky Men’s Chorale and infernally funky songs. Stephen has an absurdly eclectic musical pedigree, and promises to ransack every musical area to give you a zingling tingling feeling that will linger long after the workshop has finished.
Saturday 23 March, 10am

TALKIN’ HIP HOP with Jesse Lavery and Wade Kongas
Hip-hop is a grassroots movement that originated in New York in 1973. Now, 40 years later, two central Victorian hip-hop practitioners are presenting a chance to learn how to write a hip-hop/rap song. Jesse Lavery and Wade Kongas will take you on an illuminating introduction covering techniques of storytelling and writing, including some of the history of rap and hip-hop. Come along and learn how to harness your individual self-expression through this vibrant, all-embracing and passionate musical art form. This workshop will take place as part of the Generating Y youth day.

FUNKY HARMONIES with Maggie & Elsie Rigby
A workshop of songs written by Maggie & Elsie Rigby designed to give participants a chance to sing their hearts out. Songs reflect Maggie and Elsie’s infectious love of harmonies, and are in four or five parts, full of energy and beautiful melody, a bit wacky, sometimes spine tingling, and lots of fun! This workshop will take place as part of the Generating Y youth day.
