The late Barney Ellaga (c.1941-2015) commenced painting with the original Ngundungunya School of artists at Ngukurr on the Roper River in South East Arnhem land in 1987. He was a senior custodian for the dreaming stories associated with sites in his country, including those of Mambali country.
In 2010, Ellaga was named a finalist for the 27th Telstra National Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Art Award and in 2011 was named finalist for the prestigious Togart Contemporary Art Award.
This limited-edition print was created by the late Barney Ellaga in 2000 when he participated in a print master class with Martin King of the Australian Print Workshop. The artist’s signature stippling effect was achieved with the sugar lift etching technique, resulting in a richly textured surface.
