Getting Around

Walking map

Castlemaine has a free access and walking map that shows cultural heritage highlights of the town and includes disability access information. The map is available from the Visitor Information Centre, Castlemaine Market Building, Mostyn Street (telephone 03 5471 1795).

Bicycle hire

A fleet of bicycles, with helmets, are available for Festival patrons to get around. For bicycle hire locations telephone 03 5472 3733.

Train and coach

Friday 1 – Friday 8 April

Trains run between Melbourne and Castlemaine every hour from 6 am to 10:30 pm. Trains and coaches provide further links to surrounding cities — Bendigo, Maryborough and Ballarat — and surrounding towns. Fares from all over Victoria are surprisingly affordable. Saturday 9 and Sunday 10 April

Unfortunately track works in the Sunbury area will disrupt trains over the weekend. V/Line has made special travels arrangements for people going to the Castlemaine State Festival

Travelling from/to Melbourne to Castlemaine

Festival express buses will depart from Southern Cross Station Coach Terminal.  Normal weekend timetable applies.  Travel time will be around the same time as the train.

Travelling from/to Kyneton or Bendigo to Castlemaine

Trains will run between Kyneton and Bendigo. Normal weekend timetable applies.

Castlemaine Station

With the Castlemaine Railway Station centrally located in town, taking the train makes for a great day trip and takes approximately 80 minutes from Melbourne. For those wanting to stay longer, many accommodation providers are also happy to arrange transport to and from the station.

Steam train

Local Bus

Bendigo Airport Service shuttle bus
