Castlemaine State Festival presents

Underland

NEW WORK

Created by Karen Berger, Anthony Lyons and Kate Neal, Underland is an immersive sonic journey into the hidden worlds beneath our feet. Drawing from field recordings, deep-listening practice and site-specific sound design, the work reimagines the underground as a living, breathing space — full of resonance, memory and movement. Audiences are invited to close their eyes and travel through layers of sound that evoke soil, roots, stone and subterranean water. Part meditation, part environmental reflection, Underland invites us to listen differently — to notice what lies beneath and how the earth itself hums with quiet life. The creative team’s masterful handling of texture and tone transforms listening into something tactile and embodied. Presented in an intimate installation setting, this work offers a rare opportunity to step away from noise, enter deep time and sink into stillness — a reminder that wonder often lives in the places we overlook.
