Yirrkala, Australia
Presented by Artback NT in association with Buku-Larrnggay Mulka Art Centre
This celebratory exhibition takes the viewer on a visual journey championing the creative energies of Yirrkala Print Space, at the Buku-Larrŋgay Mulka Art Centre, northeast Arnhem Land in the Northern Territory. It is a testament to the commitment, talents and skills of generations of Yolgnu artists who over 20 years of operation at Yirrkala Print Space have utilised the medium of printmaking to share their stories with each other, and with national and international audiences.
The exhibition title, Balnhdhurr, translates as a mark made as a sign for people to follow. It describes a situation where one group goes ahead, but wants to leave a message for those following behind. An impression is scratched into the ground with a sign directing the future viewer to follow the right path. In this way, Balnhdhurr showcases the Yolngu respect for clan and Country, with many prints relating to the creation stories and Law as passed on by their ancestors, highlighting the importance of kinship.
