Carnatic music is an Indian classical form which has evolved from ancient Hindu traditions. It is characterised by its emphasis on singing, or on instrumentation performed in a singing style. Carnatic will feature a stringed orchestra consisting of traditional instruments from both Indian and Western streams of music, such as the veena and violin. The veena is an ancient Indian stringed instrument which produces the distinct resonance by plucking the string with one hand and moving along frets to produce different pitches with other hand.

This special one-off Festival performance will fill Castlemaine’s Town Hall with all the colour and transcendental potential one might expect from a large choir and classical Indian orchestra, performing traditional works that are regarded as divine.

Carnatic is presented by A Taste of India, a Melbourne-based Indian cultural group who proudly showcase artistic and aesthetic qualities of Indian culture.
