2015-17 Musica Viva FutureMakers musicians

Australia / Finland

Since its formation in 2013, Arcadia Winds has quickly become one of Australia’s most energetic, spontaneous and joyful chamber ensembles. In this unique concert of works for wind quintet and piano, Arcadia Winds comes together with internationally renowned Finnish pianist Paavali Jumppanen.

A performer with enormous versatility, Paavali’s vast repertoire extends from Bach to the avant-garde. This concert includes breathtaking works for wind and piano by Francis Poulenc, including one of his exhilaratingly cheerful sextets, further complimented by Bohuslav Martinu’s jazzy and playful French style sextet for the same instrumentation. Between these two works is Paul Dean’s wind quintet Jasper and Charlie, inspired by Western Australian writer Craig Silvey’s multi-award winning novel Jasper Jones.

This upbeat and utterly modern repertoire is the result of multiple inspired creative unions, most importantly, between exemplary Australian wind quintet Arcadia Winds and Finnish pianist Paavali Jumppanen.
