Castlemaine State Festival in partnership with the Australian National Academy of Music (ANAM) presents

ANAM: Beethoven String Quartets

Beethoven was in his late twenties when he wrote his opus 18, just a few years older than the musicians of the Australian National Academy of Music (ANAM) who will perform the works within it. We hear the influence of Haydn, who Beethoven studied with briefly, and also the youthful energy and determination of a composer writing for string quartet for the first time. This series of concerts comprising two quartets per concert, showcasing all six, is curated by Sophie Rowell, ANAM Head of Chamber Music (strings) and Concertmaster of the Melbourne Symphony Orchestra, who says of the quartets, “they are simply breathtaking, a musical exemplar of the range of human emotions”.
